What we protect, and what we can’t

Braidly holds some of the most sensitive information a family has: where children sleep, what was said in the worst week, medical records, court documents. Here is exactly how that is handled — including the limits.

Your family’s data is isolated at the database level

Every record in Braidly belongs to exactly one family, and access is enforced by row-level security policies in the database rather than by checks in the interface. A query for another family’s data does not return a permission error — it returns nothing, because the rows are not visible to that session at all.

This distinction matters. Interface-level checks fail open when a new screen forgets one; database-level policies fail closed by default.

What each person can see

  • Both parents — the shared calendar, messages between them, shared expenses, medical records, school information and shared documents.
  • Neither parent — the other parent’s private journal. Journals are private to whoever wrote them, full stop.
  • Children — a simplified view of the custody schedule only. Never messages, never expenses, never journals, never documents.
  • Professionals — only the record types a parent explicitly grants, read-only, revocable at any time, and visible to the parent who granted it.

Records that cannot be quietly changed

Once legal hold is active on an account, messages, journal entries and expenses cannot be edited or deleted — by either parent, or by Braidly. A database trigger blocks the operation, and a soft-delete pattern across all record types means nothing is ever physically removed while a hold is in effect.

Court exports are sealed with a SHA-256 hash of the whole export, so if a copy is altered afterwards the alteration is demonstrable rather than arguable. More on court-ready records →

Account security

Sign in with Google, with a password, or with an emailed one-time link — no password to be reused or guessed if you prefer the link. All traffic is encrypted in transit and data is encrypted at rest.

If you share a device or suspect someone else has had access to your email account, change your Braidly password and your email password, and sign out of all sessions. A co-parent with access to your inbox can request a sign-in link.

The AI, plainly

The AI Tone Coach analyses a message you are composing and offers a calmer rewrite. It suggests only. It never sends, blocks or edits a message on its own, and you always see both versions before choosing.

The AI Mediator joins a thread only when a parent explicitly invites it. It takes no side and makes no finding. Neither feature is a substitute for a human mediator, a therapist or an attorney, and Braidly does not present them as one.

If your situation is not safe, an app is not the answer

Braidly is built for coordination and documentation between co-parents. It is not a protective measure, it does not prevent contact, and no amount of record-keeping substitutes for a safety plan.

If you or your children are in immediate danger, call 911. For confidential support and safety planning in the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233, or by texting START to 88788. In Canada, provincial crisis lines are listed at sheltersafe.ca.

If a protective order or no-contact order governs your situation, follow it — including any terms about how and whether you communicate. Talk to your attorney before using any communication app, Braidly included.
